If you’re traveling with a toddler who can’t ride the big attractions, ask for Rider Switch at the entrance of any height-restricted ride — one adult waits with the child while the rest of your group rides, then you swap and board immediately through the Lightning Lane without waiting again.
What Is Rider Switch?#
Rider Switch Program, also called Child Swap, lets families with young children (or anyone who cannot or chooses not to ride) experience attractions without everyone waiting in line twice. Here’s how it works: one adult stays with the non-riding guest while the rest of your party queues and rides. After the first group finishes, the waiting adult gets to ride immediately without re-queuing — they’ll board through the Lightning Lane entrance, skipping the standby wait entirely.
This is a game-changer for parents of toddlers who want to experience thrill rides like TRON Lightcycle / Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, or Avatar Flight of Passage without dragging a cranky two-year-old through a 90-minute standby line.
Which Rides Offer Rider Switch?#
Every attraction with a height requirement offers Rider Switch. That includes major thrill rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Expedition Everest, Slinky Dog Dash, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Some attractions without height requirements also participate — ask a cast member at the entrance if you’re unsure, but assume any ride with a height restriction qualifies.
How to Request Rider Switch#
Walk up to the attraction entrance and tell a cast member you’d like to use Rider Switch before anyone in your party enters the queue. The cast member will issue a Rider Switch return time (usually valid immediately after the first group rides) and direct the first group into the appropriate queue — standby or Lightning Lane, depending on what you’re using.
The waiting adult stays outside the attraction with the non-riding child. When the first group finishes, the waiting adult scans their Rider Switch return at the Lightning Lane entrance and boards. You can bring one additional rider with you — so if two adults waited with the toddler, both can ride together using the Rider Switch pass, plus one person from the original riding group can re-ride.
Rider Switch and Lightning Lane#
If your first group uses Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Lightning Lane Single Pass to board, the Rider Switch group also enters through the Lightning Lane. This is the best-case scenario: your party skips the standby line twice. If the first group waits in standby, the Rider Switch group still boards via Lightning Lane after the first group finishes — you’re not stuck waiting in standby again.
Book Lightning Lane for your must-ride attractions and stack Rider Switch on top. For example, if you have a Lightning Lane return for TRON at 11:00 AM, the first adult rides at 11:00 via Lightning Lane, then the second adult boards immediately after, also via Lightning Lane. You’ve both experienced one of Disney World’s hardest-to-access rides without a toddler meltdown.
Rider Switch and DAS#
Guests using Disability Access Service (DAS) can combine it with Rider Switch. The DAS guest waits outside the attraction while the rest of the party rides, then uses the Rider Switch return to board. This works seamlessly — the DAS guest doesn’t need to wait in any physical queue, and the family still gets the benefit of swapping riders. Strategy Tips for Families with Toddlers#
Plan which adult most wants to ride which attraction. If one parent is desperate to experience Flight of Passage and the other can take or leave it, send the enthusiast in the first group and let them savor it while the less-interested parent waits with the toddler. The second adult can still ride using Rider Switch, but you’ve optimized who gets the “first ride” experience.
Use Rider Switch for the headliners with the longest waits: TRON, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Flight of Passage, Slinky Dog Dash, and Rise of the Resistance. These are the rides where Rider Switch saves the most time and sanity. Don’t bother with it on shorter-wait attractions like Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin or The Seas with Nemo & Friends — just take turns riding while the other parent entertains the toddler nearby.
Book Lightning Lane for your top-priority Rider Switch attractions. If you’re using Genie+ (now called Lightning Lane Multi Pass), prioritize booking Seven Dwarfs, Slinky Dog, or other high-demand rides early in the day. Pair that Lightning Lane reservation with Rider Switch, and both adults ride a top-tier attraction in under 30 minutes total.
Rider Switch is free and requires no advance registration. You don’t need to set anything up in the My Disney Experience app or speak to Guest Services ahead of time. Just show up at the ride entrance and ask.
If you’re park-hopping, use Rider Switch at your second park for evening rides. Let the toddler nap at the hotel, then hit EPCOT or Hollywood Studios after 2:00 PM. The waiting adult can grab a snack or drink while the first group rides — you’re not stuck standing in a queue corral with a restless child.
