Avatar Flight of Passage is Animal Kingdom’s best ride but posts 90–150 minute waits all day. Hit it at rope drop or buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Kilimanjaro Safaris is best early morning or late afternoon when animals are active.
Get to Avatar Flight of Passage at rope drop or buy Lightning Lane Single Pass — there’s no middle ground. This ride posts 120+ minute waits by mid-morning and holds them all day. It’s the single most in-demand attraction at Animal Kingdom, and your entire park strategy should account for it.
The Must-Do Tier#
Avatar Flight of Passage
Avatar Flight of Passage is the best ride at Animal Kingdom and one of the best at Walt Disney World. You’ll ride a banshee over Pandora’s floating mountains in a flight simulator that feels more immersive than anything Disney has built before. The physical sensations — wind, mist, scents — sell the experience completely.
The wait time problem is real and unrelenting. Expect 90–150 minute standby waits from 10 a.m. until park close. Early morning entry (if you’re staying at a Disney resort) gives you a 30-minute head start, which is your best shot at a sub-30-minute wait. Otherwise, buy Lightning Lane Single Pass for it — Flight of Passage is the only Single Pass attraction at Animal Kingdom and is not included with Multi Pass. Book it as early as your window allows (up to 7 days before check-in for resort guests, covering the whole stay, or 3 days ahead of each park day otherwise, at 7 a.m. Eastern). Don’t gamble on “it might die down later” — it won’t.
Kilimanjaro Safaris
Kilimanjaro Safaris is the other headliner, and it’s the rare Animal Kingdom attraction where timing changes your experience. Go first thing in the morning when animals are most active, or visit in the late afternoon when they emerge again as temperatures cool. Midday safaris often mean sleeping lions and rhinos hiding in shade.
The 18-minute ride covers 110 acres of savanna with giraffes, elephants, lions, and dozens of other species. Every safari is different because the animals roam freely. You’re not guaranteed to see everything, but you’ll see enough to make it worth a 30–40 minute wait. Kilimanjaro Safaris is included with Lightning Lane Multi Pass — use one of your Multi Pass selections here if Flight of Passage is your rope drop priority.
The Thrill Rides#
Expedition Everest
Expedition Everest is Animal Kingdom’s only true roller coaster and the best option for guests who want speed and drops. You’ll climb toward the peak, encounter the Yeti’s handiwork, then race backward through darkness before a final forward sprint down the mountain. The coaster is smooth enough for first-time riders but intense enough to satisfy coaster fans.
Waits hover around 45–70 minutes midday. Ride it early or late, or use a Lightning Lane Multi Pass selection if you’ve already secured Flight of Passage. The queue is well-themed with Himalayan artifacts and expedition gear, so the standby line doesn’t feel like punishment.
Dinosaur
Dinosaur is the park’s most divisive ride. You’ll love it if you want jerky, chaotic dark ride thrills and jump scares from animatronic dinosaurs. You’ll hate it if you’re sensitive to rough motion or loud audio. The ride vehicle lurches violently through a dark prehistoric forest while a Carnotaurus hunts you.
It’s intense for young kids despite the relatively low height requirement. Waits rarely exceed 30–40 minutes, making it a solid mid-afternoon choice when other attractions are slammed. Skip it if you have back or neck issues — the ride is genuinely rough.
Kali River Rapids
Kali River Rapids is a short (under 5 minutes) but effective river raft ride. You will get wet — possibly soaked. The drop isn’t massive, but the circular raft means you can’t predict who gets drenched. Go midday when Florida heat makes getting wet a relief, not a misery.
Waits peak at 40–60 minutes on hot days. It’s skippable if you’re on a tight schedule or visiting in cooler months. The ride doesn’t offer much story or theming beyond “save the rainforest,” so it’s purely about the water and the drop.
Why Animal Kingdom Closes Early#
Animal Kingdom typically closes earlier than Magic Kingdom or EPCOT because the park doesn’t run nighttime fireworks. The animals’ welfare takes priority, and loud pyrotechnics would disturb them. This means you have fewer hours to hit the major rides, which makes rope drop and Lightning Lane planning even more critical. Don’t assume you can “catch Flight of Passage later” — later might not exist if you’re visiting on a day when the park closes at 6 or 7 p.m.
Check the official Disney website for exact park hours before your visit, as closing times vary by season. Plan to arrive at park opening and knock out Flight of Passage and Kilimanjaro Safaris in your first 90 minutes. That strategy gives you the rest of the day to explore at a relaxed pace without stressing over the park’s two longest waits.
