What Character Dining Actually Is#
Character dining means you eat a full meal while Disney characters visit your table for photos and brief interactions. This is fundamentally different from character meet-and-greets in the parks, where you wait in line for one photo with one character. At character meals, multiple characters rotate through the restaurant, stopping at every table. You stay seated, enjoy your food, and the characters come to you — no rope drop strategy required.
The Best Character Dining Experiences by Character Type#
Mickey and Friends
Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort is the classic Mickey experience. You’ll see Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto at both breakfast and dinner. It’s a buffet-style meal with standard American fare. The monorail runs through the building, which kids love.
Topolino’s Terrace offers breakfast only with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy in artist-inspired outfits. This is table service (not buffet), and the food quality is significantly better than Chef Mickey’s — think waffles topped with sour cream and berries, not steam-tray scrambled eggs. Book this one if you care about the meal itself.
'Ohana features Lilo and Stitch at breakfast, served family-style. The characters also include Mickey and Pluto.
Disney Princesses
Cinderella’s Royal Table inside Magic Kingdom’s castle is the most expensive and hardest-to-book character meal. You’ll meet Cinderella herself in the castle lobby, then see a rotating selection of princesses (typically Ariel, Aurora, Snow White, and Jasmine) during your meal. This is table service with prix fixe menus.
Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in EPCOT’s Norway pavilion offers a similar princess lineup at a lower price point. You meet one princess at the entrance, then see 4-5 more during the meal. It’s family-style service for breakfast and lunch, table service for dinner.
1900 Park Fare at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort reopened in 2024 as a “Wish Makers”-themed character buffet. Both breakfast and dinner feature the same lineup: Aladdin (in his Prince Ali attire), Cinderella, Mirabel, and Tiana, all celebrating the power of a wish. This is buffet-style. (Note: the former Cinderella-and-stepsisters dinner is no longer offered.)
Winnie the Pooh and Classic Characters
The Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom features Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet at a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Villains and Unique Characters
Storybook Dining at Artist Point at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is the only villain-focused character meal, featuring the Evil Queen, Dopey, Grumpy, and occasionally other dwarfs. This is dinner only, table service, and the food is upscale — think prime rib and pan-seared chicken, not chicken tenders.
Chip ‘n’ Dale and Farmer Mickey
Garden Grill Restaurant in EPCOT rotates slowly while you dine, overlooking scenes from the Living with the Land attraction. Mickey, Pluto, and Chip ‘n’ Dale appear in farmer outfits. The meal is family-style for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Buffet vs Table Service vs Family-Style#
Buffet means you serve yourself from a large spread. Table service means you order from a menu and servers bring your food. Family-style means servers bring large platters to your table for everyone to share.
Buffets (Chef Mickey’s, The Crystal Palace, 1900 Park Fare) work best for picky eaters and large groups. Family-style (Garden Grill Restaurant, 'Ohana breakfast) gives you variety without leaving your seat. Table service (Topolino’s Terrace, Cinderella’s Royal Table) offers the best food quality.
How Much Character Dining Costs#
Character meals are expensive. Expect to pay more than standard Disney table service because you’re paying for the character experience. Check current pricing on the Dining Reservations page, as prices vary by restaurant, meal period, and season.
When to Book#
Make reservations exactly 60 days before your arrival date at 6:00 AM Eastern Time. If you’re staying at a Disney resort, you can book 60 days before check-in for your entire stay (up to 10 nights), giving you an advantage for later dates in your trip.
Set an alarm. Have your credit card ready — Disney requires a credit card to hold character dining reservations. Book your hardest-to-get meals first: Cinderella’s Royal Table, Topolino’s Terrace, and Storybook Dining at Artist Point typically disappear fastest.
